The memory of our first meeting still lingered pleasantly in my mind as Luke and I made our way to the Bellagio’s elevator.

I might have been naked when he found me, freshly created and crying outside Eden, but Luke certainly made sure I dressed well now.

“Are you sure you’re going to be able to walk okay?” I asked from beneath his arm. He was draped over the shoulders of my red Versace cocktail dress, leaning on me just enough that I could tell he was struggling to keep his feet.

“Funny,” said Luke. He wore a suit from the same designer, cut in white. His eyes were smiling, but they looked more sunken than usual. Beneath their glimmering, he looked tired, too. “After the way you just took my cock, I was about to ask you the same thing.”

“Very funny.” Truth be told, Luke had left me a little sore. Not that I minded. “It’s good to know that you’ve always been a charmer. Even from the beginning.”

Seeing myself in Eden through Luke’s memory had certainly been eye-opening. It was equal parts touching and thrilling, to know how much he’d wanted me. Even from our first meeting.

Even before he’d ever spoken to me at all.

“I was clumsier back then,” Luke said with a harsh laugh. “Too cocky. I was lucky the only other man on the entire face of the Earth was such a wanker, really. If I’d tried that gambit on you now, I imagine you would have smacked me.”

“And I imagine you would have deserved it,” I said fondly. “But it’s good to know you’ve honed your pick-up skills through the years.” There was a sigh on my lips in the place of a smile, though. “I wish I didn’t know how badly all of our trysts ended up. It would have been nice to know that we managed to get a happy ending at least once.”

“Can’t have a happy ending if there’s never any ending at all.” Luke’s tone was almost wistful. For the first time since time began, we were both staring down the barrel of an ending now.

Luckily, Luke had a plan. Even if it hadn’t occurred to him until I’d forced him to think of one. It was better than nothing, though.

I’d take whatever chance we could make for ourselves at this point.

But if Luke’s plan didn’t work—if The Fourth really did take his soul and kill him for good, there wouldn’t be another go-round this time.

This time, our ending would be final. No hopes for a spin-off or a sequel. Just a hole in my life where my husband should have been.

An empty place in my bed where he’d never be again.

“Are you going to clue me in on exactly what this plan of yours is?” I asked as the elevator’s doors opened to the Bellagio’s first floor. “Or are we just going in blind?”

“I can assure you that it’s a gamble,” Luke said darkly.

I narrowed my eyes. “Is that… a pun?”

“Maybe.”

Ugh. He was incorrigible.
